Victorian Hydrogen Hub

Description:

Do you want to be part of the Green Steel revolution? Contribute to Swinburne’s exciting Victorian Hydrogen Hub (VH2) by improving the sustainability of green steel. One scholarship is available for an enthusiastic student to undertake the Masters degree with the research project 'Decarbonisation Options for Reheat Furnaces' as part of a broader multidisciplinary research team.
Led by Swinburne University of Technology, working in partnership with CSIRO and Germany’s ARENA 2036, VH2 is bringing together researchers, industry partners and business. Testing, trialing and demonstrating new and emerging hydrogen technologies, VH2 is supporting sustainable manufacturing practices and the ability to store clean energy from renewable sources, striving to create a sustainable future for all.
Steel production is a major contributor to human-made greenhouse gases and finding effective methods for decarbonising different stages of steel production is a major focus of international research at this time. Working directly with engineers from InfraBuild, this specific project will examine and evaluate the major options for decarbonising reheat furnaces for steel production, helping them to be more sustainable.
The major objectives of this project include a significant review of the major options for decarbonising and/or efficiency improvements for reheat furnaces, consideration of the metallurgical/quality implications of using different energy sources, and the development of an appropriate thermodynamic/heat transfer model of a reheat furnace to quantify the energy usage for different scenarios.
To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or relevant 4 years degree with a minimum average of 70% in the final year of study (H1 or H2A).
  • The ideal candidate is expected to be enthusiastic, self-motivated with a demonstrable aptitude for research and development.
  • Good team-working, observational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer is essential to carry out this study.

A full list of selection criteria is available within the position description.
An undergraduate degree in Engineering or relevant 4-years degree with a minimum average of 70% in the final year of study (H1 or H2A).
Swinburne Horizon 2025 draws upon our understanding of future challenges. With this new strategic plan, we choose to build Swinburne as the prototype of a new and different university – one that is truly of Technology, of Innovation and of Entrepreneurship, and proud of it. We are committed to a differentiated university proposition in education and research, so that:

  • Every Swinburne learner gets a work experience
