About the National Measurement Institute

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the measurement science and regulatory delivery division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR). NMI is a highly technically specialised division, with significant interactions with other parts of government, business, researchers, and other stakeholders across the economy. It is the Australian government’s peak measurement authority and the vehicle through which the Commonwealth (the Australian Government) discharges its Constitutional responsibility for weights and measures.

The NMI develops and maintains national measurement standards that are recognised internationally; administers the regulatory framework for measurement in Australia; and delivers world-class measurement products and client services including instrument calibrations, measurement consultancies, and testing and analytical services, including for food, health, safety and the environment.
