The position of Technical Assistant – Viticulture Biosecurity forms a part of the Agriculture Victoria Research branch within the Agriculture Victoria group.
Agriculture Victoria works with industry and community stakeholders to support the agriculture, food and fibre sector to become more globally competitive, innovative and resilient.
The Agriculture Victoria Research Branch represents DJPR's agricultural research and innovation function. The Agriculture Research Branch provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in the following areas: a) Genomics and Cellular Sciences; b) Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases; c) Plant Sciences; d) Plant Production Sciences; e) Animal Production Sciences; and f) Agriculture Resources Sciences.
The Role
Agriculture Victoria Research has the need for a Technical Assistant position in the area of biosecurity pest management. It has been identified that current work needs to be further developed in the area of grapevine phylloxera management with a particular focus on management of genetic variants of a species through the development of quarantine protocols and novel detection methods. The position of Technical Assistant (Invertebrate and Weed Sciences - Viticulture Biosecurity) is to conduct glasshouse, laboratory and field based research focused on quarantine management and detection of insect pests of significance to the viticulture industry. The position requires skills in grapevine maintenance, insect rearing and bioassay development. The applicant should have strong laboratory skills and glasshouse rearing of insects and plants. The applicant should also be used to working in a collaborative team environment and have a strong awareness of plant biosecurity regulations.
