The Role

Permanent, working up to 58.8 hours per fortnight

You will be responsible to:

  • Provide a counselling service to assist prospective and current students to determine their career aspirations and make an informed appropriate selection of the organisation’s courses to match their preferred academic and /or vocational pathway and potential abilities.
     
  • Provide a counselling service to current students experiencing psychological or emotional distress that is adversely affecting their performance.
     
  • Act as a consultant to staff within the organisation to provide guidance and support to teachers on the effective behaviour management and educational counselling of students.
     
  • Act as a facilitator in resolving conflict that involves one or more students.
     
  • Act as an advocate for students and liaise with educational and administrative staff on matters affecting student welfare and development.

About You

These are the capabilities required to undertake the role successfully:

  • An understanding of the needs and constraints experienced by the broad range of people entering the organisation and established proficiency and expertise in counselling, mediation, advocacy career guidance and staff consultancy, with demonstrated skills in assessment and appropriate strategies to address student problems.
     
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal communication skills with the ability to relate to students with a high degree of sensitivity and to staff in a professional, cooperative manner.
     
  • Extensive experience in providing career and course information, preferably in a vocational education and training environment.
     
  • Well-developed self-management skills including flexibility and a capacity to remain impartial and manage a range of different tasks simultaneously.
     
  • Well-developed skills in problem solving, liaison, negotiation, conflict resolution and the ability to exercise sound judgement.
