The Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist / Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) will provide clinical care to adult and paediatric patients who present to Bathurst Base Hospital Emergency Department (ED). In addition to carrying a clinical patient load, the Staff Specialist / VMO will be expected to supervise junior medical staff, review clinical cases seen by juniors or trainees, and provide senior decision making to expedite clinical care and patient flow. The Staff Specialist / VMO must be capable of working collaboratively with nursing managers in managing the ED floor to optimise patient flow and maintain a safe working environment. They must be able to communicate with admitting teams, medical retrieval teams and tertiary referral centres for escalation of patient care when appropriate.

  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  • Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  • Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
  • Fellowship of the applicable College.
  • Evidence of the following attributes: Ability to work under pressure, be flexible, organised and autonomous.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply clinical knowledge and concepts in practical situations in accordance with contemporary evidence-based best practice in Emergency Medicine, and in the context of multiple competing priorities.
