This is a fantastic opportunity be part of the Defence Trailblazer for Concept to Sovereign Capability - a collaborative partnership between the University of Adelaide and UNSW. This opportunity will be based at UNSW Canberra, in Australia’s leading space mission team UNSW Canberra Space.

This Space Systems Engineer position sits within the UNSW Canberra Space team in the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT).

UNSW Canberra Space has over the past 8 years flown 5 satellite missions including the world’s most complex cubesat mission M2; carries out innovative in-orbit space research particularly in the application of artificial intelligence to space technology and Space Domain Awareness; and with its entrepreneurial mindset has spun out three successful space companies. The Canberra Space goal is to use that capability to perform high impact science and technology development that will in turn make a significant contribution to meeting Australia's need for safe and secure access to space-based technologies for economic, social and strategic benefit.

A critical enabler for this space engineering and space science R&D is the ability to develop software for spacecraft platform and payloads. The Software Engineer’s role is to increase the capability of UNSW Canberra Space to deliver innovative space science and space engineering R&D outcomes through the provision of additional software engineering support to the portfolio of programs.

Who You Are:

  • A degree in computer or software engineering or other related discipline with a depth of subsequent relevant experience.
  • Experience in software design for architectures including but not limited to ARM, PICs and SPARC.
  • Demonstrated experience in data processing using Python, Matlab and Excel and experience in data management through a software repository and version control.
  • Experience in RTOS concepts and software design, utilising operating systems such as FreeRTOS, RTEMS, and Embedded Linux.
  • Ability to design and develop embedded software/firmware using C programming language.
  • Experience designing low level hardware drivers for peripherals including but not limited to UARTs, I2C, SPI, CAN, Memories.
  • Knowledge of application layer design for software architectures, and the ability to undertake software and hardware integration tests.
  • Demonstrated experience testing and debugging equipment including but not limited to Oscilloscopes, Logic Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, Multimeters and Bench-Top power supplies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team, and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely and efficient manner to successfully achieve project/task objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively and respectfully with people from widely differing backgrounds both on technical and non-technical levels.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate may be required to hold or attain an Australian government security clearance.
