About the role
As Sydney is experiencing unprecedented growth requiring innovative commercial solutions in servicing the growth of the city, the Business Partnership Development (BPD) team has been created to focus on commercial and corporate development activity.
The Senior Commercial Manager is a newly created leadership role that offers a unique opportunity to shape the external and internal engagement and the development of the partnerships with the private sector, developers and other industry players. There are two parts of the role:
1. Project and Commercial Capability accountabilities, generating and executing commercial opportunities; and
2. People partner accountabilities, focusing on the leadership and management aspect of the role, assessing project requirements across the BPD portfolio and allocating team members to various projects based on the skills, project requirements and development needs. You will be managing a team of 3 - 5 professionals in a growing team and supporting assembled cross-functional project teams during deal execution.
This position requires outstanding commercial acumen, strategic and lateral thinking, agile problem-solving skills, exceptional communication, leadership, project management, negotiation and influencing skills.
You will drive the end-to-end transaction execution for complex commercial arrangements such as PPPs, bespoke commercial partnerships with private sector and commercialisation of new products across Sydney Water.

- Proactively shape new commercial opportunities and set up new partnerships with the private sector, developers, investors and other industry players that maximises the potential value for Sydney Water aligned to its strategic and commercial objectives.
- Lead the management and execution of the portfolio of commercial projects and partnerships, including commercial strategy, deal structuring, sourcing external financing, negotiation with the investors, developers and other infrastructure players
- Develop and maintain a pipeline of major commercial activity across the organisation. Including from concept through structuring and execution.
- In collaboration with the Innovation & Product Development team, assess the ability to scale and commercialise new product lines from idea generation to concept testing to partnership assessment to commercialisation.
- Develop commercial frameworks and Investment Decision Framework for the organisation for large/complex commercial activity in collaboration with Customer Strategy & Engagement, Asset Lifecycle and Finance Groups.
- Monitor relevant industry trends, developments, innovation, technology and the success of various international business models in the industry.
- Provide leadership, coaching support and capability development to direct commercial managers and commercial leads in the development and delivery of commercial projects
- Assess project requirements across the portfolio and allocate team members to various projects based on the skills, project requirements and development needs
- Manage and balance the workload and deliverables across the team
- Create higher efficiencies in managing time and staff dedicated to project execution
- Drive capability development within Business Partnership Development team
- Align the team to servicing all type of projects with specific targets
- Create more internal development opportunities
About you
- Significant experience in infrastructure deal execution, leveraged finance, principal investment, project financing, corporate finance, private equity, transaction advisory services and in-house commercial structuring and execution role (Big 4)
- Commercial Partnerships exposure and Business Development teams of large complex businesses such as waste management, recycling, infrastructure companies, utilities and alike
- Strong commercial background with experience in identifying business opportunities, development of commercial strategy, and negotiating commercial outcomes
- A positive can-do attitude with the desire to make a difference; proactively drive change and engage with the private sector and develop strategic partnerships
- Exceptional ability to understand complex business problems quickly and drive the dynamic engagement with the market and with internal Sydney Water teams
- Ability to build trust, strategically influence and communicate effectively
- Be passionate about leadership, building and aligning teams, supporting team development and managing projects portfolio.
