Senior Bioinformatics Engineer

 

Description:


In this position, you will work in a cross-institutional team and contribute to the Australian BioCommons' BioCloud project delivering a suite of software and services in response to national priorities like precision medicine, biosecurity, and environmental conservation. You will work across advanced bioinformatics applications including generative biology, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-throughput data processing platforms.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • collaborate with Australian BioCommons and SIH teams to develop methods and services supporting the life sciences
  • lead a portfolio of impactful bioinformatics projects
  • use your expertise in translational bioinformatics and software engineering to design and implement user-centric and high-impact service and software solutions for life science research
  • develop and implement AI applications in bioinformatics and computational biology to enhance research capabilities
  • provide technical mentorship to bioinformaticians, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation
  • work collaboratively with other parts of SIH and external partners and other parts of the University of Sydney to build and develop an engineering and entrepreneurial culture in support of bioinformatics.

About you

  • postgraduate qualification or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training in a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology)
  • extensive experience working in a Linux/UNIX environment, using scientific computing languages (e.g. Python, R), and workflow and software management technologies (e.g. Singularity, Docker, Git, Nextflow)
  • advanced knowledge and experience working with next generation sequencing datasets (e.g. genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics)
  • experience working across high-performance and cloud computing environments and utilising code performance optimisation techniques
  • strong organisational skills, with the ability to handle competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills able to engender positive collaborations and engagements
  • excellent project management skills, demonstrating the ability to collaborate effectively and manage competing priorities to meet required timelines.
