ANU has a reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as an international reputation for impactful research and education overseas. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine is comprised of the ANU School of Medicine and Psychology, John Curtin School of Medical Research and National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH). These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.

The Health Data Analytics Team (HDAT) is a recently established team within the College of Health and Medicine that aims to strengthening and reforming health systems through application of the state-of-the-art quantitative research methods to inform policy-maker decision making.

The HDAT is a new team with a great potential to contribute to research excellence of the ANU and improved health policy and program delivery across Australia. We were created as a cross-college team, and we are committed to:

  • Conducting and promoting impactful health research to contribute to Australian society;
  • Developing capacity and capability within the College to respond to data analytics needs and timely evidence generation when engaging with Commonwealth, state and territory policy departments; and,
  • Enhance data access and data governance
  • Strengthen partnerships between the College and public service departments and agencies.

The Research Officer will be a member of HDAT, and accountable to the Head, HDAT. The Research Officer will be expected to work collegially, leading by example to develop and maintain effective, productive and beneficial workplace relationships with all academic and professional College staff, students and honorary appointees, as well as with government and industry stakeholders. To be successful in this position you need to have strong attention to detail, organised and experienced in data preparation, documentation, statistical analysis involving large-scale linked population health datasets, including extensive experience using SAS, Stata or an equivalent package.

For 2023, our focus includes improving data access through partnership building, exploring a range of emerging and evolving data initiatives and undertaking analysis with practical policy impacts. The planned analyses will deepen our analytical work with linked data sets such as MADIP and other complex administrative data.
