The Victorian Transmission Investment team has developed to meet the needs of Australia’s energy transition. Focused on optimizing the development of the Victorian Electricity Transmission Network, this team encompasses diverse expertise in engineering, economics, design, land planning, stakeholder management, and project coordination. Spread across various AEMO office locations, the team manage a range of projects spanning from initial planning to execution phases.
As a Principal Engineer the prime focus is providing leadership through coaching, specialist professional engineering expertise, team management, and seamless collaboration with key stakeholders. Your responsibilities will entail evaluating transmission network capability and designing solutions to ensure safe, reliable, and secure provision of transmission network services to cater to meet current and future stakeholder needs. The role is critical to supporting the major energy transition in Victoria and supporting the needs of key stakeholders. You'll lead key strategic projects within the Victorian Transmission Investment team and support the delivery of AEMO's transmission roadmap for Victoria.
What You Will Be Doing
- Provide technical advice and expertise to coordinate internal resources, and manage externals stakeholders, to deliver efficient and effective investment decisions in the Victorian electricity transmission network.
- Oversee analysis, engaging extensively with stakeholders to support the preparation of reports and recommendations for management’s consideration, focusing on transmission adequacy and transmission asset investment decisions.
- Provide expert technical advice, expertise, and leadership on planning and investment matters, including the coordination of Victorian transmission asset augmentations and joint planning work with key stakeholders and other network service providers.
- Support managers in people management processes: recruitment, staff development, succession planning, training, and performance evaluations.
- Coordinate with stakeholders and facilitate industry forums, ensuring AEMO's planning aligns effectively, and relationships thrive through consultation and collaborative planning.
- Establish and implement policies/processes for top-tier network analysis quality.
- Provide management with high-quality reports on various planning topics, contributing significantly to key planning documents like regulatory investment tests for transmission (RIT-Ts) and other cost-benefit assessments, and the Victorian Annual Planning Report (VAPR).
Role
What you will bring to the role
- Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to power systems.
- Significant industry or related experience in electricity transmission network planning, encompassing experience in the context of jurisdictional-, short-, medium- and long-term planning.
- Demonstrated experience in electricity transmission network analysis and the interpretation of analysis performed by others.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using electricity network analysis tools or relevant software for steady state and dynamic analysis (in particular PSS/E and PSCAD). An understanding of, or experience in, market modelling analysis using software such as PLEXOS will also be viewed favourably.
- Understanding and knowledge of the physical operation of the electricity transmission systems and the overarching markets.
- Experience in cost-benefit assessment, including probability-based analysis of investment decisions.
- Solid knowledge of AEMO's Victorian jurisdictional role and functions, energy markets, as well as pertinent laws, regulations, rules, licenses, and agreements.
