Description:

Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased economic impact, vulnerability and potential magnitude of harm.

To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology is undertaking significant steps to deliver a more customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operation. This is an exciting direction for the Bureau which will change the way we deliver services to Australian communities.

The operating model for the Bureau has created new career pathways and enhance our culture to empower our people to learn and grow. As part of this transformation, we are introducing new roles that will assist the Bureau in delivering world class weather products and services within the newly formed Community Services Group (CSG).

The CSG is comprised of three programs, National Production Services (NPS), Environmental Prediction Services and Decision Support Services. NPS will operate with a national capability to lead and coordinate national forecast and warning services. It will deliver a 24/7 integrated capability across Melbourne and Brisbane as a nationally resilient operation.

Reporting to the National Production Operations Leader and the National Production Senior Meteorologist, the National Production Meteorologist is responsible for the delivery of meteorological data and guidance material from numerical weather prediction models and post processing systems, contributing to the formulation of weather and hazard outlooks. This role involves shift work to cover a 24/7 roster.

To be successful in this role, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the evolving weather, flood, ocean and climate landscapes. You will require a thorough understanding of meteorology with a complementary foundational knowledge (or capacity to develop) in hydrology, oceanography and climatology.

In this role you will help establish the Bureau's NPS capability. With a people centred approach, you will contribute leadership and technical excellence to a team working towards a new national operations approach.
