Description:

The Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub) will be a world-class, collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, CSIRO, industry and research partners. AIR Hub has been designed with industry and research leaders at the forefront of Australia’s Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing industries to reinforce the Australia’s pre-eminent position in advanced composites manufacturing for civil aerospace projects and accelerate development of composites manufacturing for integrated structures and airframes in eVTOL urban passenger, cargo and aeromedical air vehicles.

We are looking for a PhD candidate who will work on:

  • Digital twinning of the environment in which AAM may be operated, undertaking research into the ability of existing hardware and software to accurately characterise and locate natural and manmade objects, commencing in a regional location in Victoria (approx.. 2 hrs from Melbourne CBD) in which AAM trials will be undertaken.
  • Interfacing with the industry partners regarding sensors and related systems already integrated into an AAM surrogate or AAM like aircraft for Trials
  • Analysing trials data with reference to its applicability to:
    • CASA safety cases and operational approvals
    • ASA and Thales Integration into air traffic management systems
    • Integration into the AAM navigation and control systems of future AAM operators
  • Consideration of processes for near-real-time updating of data to account for changes
  • Further digital twinning of aircraft and functional performance in emulated / simulated environments for fully digitalized development and digital testing
  • Utilisation of artificial intelligence and other machine learning techniques to aid in digital development


About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Communicating effectively with peers, industry partners and suppliers to achieve collaborative outcomes, including in cross-functional teams
  • Working both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative manner
  • Being enthusiastic, self-motivated with a demonstrable aptitude for research and development.
