Financial Accountant

 

Description:

Ensure Council complies with external financial reporting requirements and to maintain the policies, systems and financial data used to formulate the reports associated with this task.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review capital works projects on a monthly basis to determine the capitalisation of assets or write off non-capital expenditure.
  • Liaise with the relevant departments in the Environment and Infrastructure directorate via regular meetings to obtain the required information to capitalise infrastructure assets (where the information is not directly available in the Conquest Asset Management system).
  • Deal with queries in the Financial Accounting inbox
  • Assistance with bank reconciliation may be required
  • Other adhoc financial accounting tasks as required

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with asset capitalisation is preferred
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in financial accounting
  • A sound understanding of accounting principles and procedures (financial and management and asset), accounting standards and financial accounting systems
  • High levels of attention to detail and accuracy
  • A sound understanding of internal control procedures pertaining to financial systems and general ledger reconciliation principles and practices.
  • Well-developed analytical skills
  • Sound Microsoft Office and Excel skills
  • A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Commerce, Economics or Business Studies with CA or CPA accreditation or working towards.
  • Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels of an organisation and technical and non-technical individuals
