El1 Assistant Directors

Description:

Our Department Values

Our values set the direction for what it means to work in our department. They inform the standard and expectations of behaviours, skills and capabilities and the attributes we currently have, will continually work to achieve and develop, and that we use to acknowledge and attract, retain and recruit into our department.

The department supports workplace diversity and values the contribution of people from diverse backgrounds. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people with cultural and linguistic diversity, and LGBTIQ people. The department is committed to achieving gender equality and, in particular, supporting women’s progression into senior leadership.

At the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, the Regional Development, Local Government and Regional Recovery Division delivers grants, coordinates proposals and provides policy advice to the Australian Government relating to regional strategic issues and microeconomic reform. The division works to strengthen the sustainability, capacity and diversity of regional economies through place-based policy and program development; negotiation of local partnerships between all levels of government and local communities; and the provision of grants and other financial assistance to regional economies via local councils, non-profits and other non-government entities.

The Regional Development, Local Government and Regional Recovery Division enables local communities and economies across Australia by supporting and developing policies that consider the needs and capacity of the region. We provide advice across portfolios to help ensure all Commonwealth policies consider, articulate and mitigate the impacts on local and regional areas. We are experts in place-based policy and the needs of the regions, from supporting small community organisations to investing in transformative infrastructure projects.

Roles are available in the Regional Policy Branch and the Regional Intelligence and Local Government Branch.

The Regional Policy Branch is responsible for supporting local communities and economies in rural and regional Australia by leading the development and delivery of regionally-focused policies and providing advice across government to ensure policies appropriately consider implications for regional areas. We are experts in place-based policy development and implementation to benefit Australia’s regions, from supporting small community organisations to investing in transformative infrastructure projects.

The Regional Intelligence and Local Government Branch is responsible for developing and implementing the Australian Government’s agenda for local government and the Regional Development Australia Committee network. This includes administering the Financial Assistance Grant program; managing inter-governmental and regional stakeholder relationships; and compiling, maintaining, analysing and sharing authoritative local government and regional intelligence.

We have several teams involved in various aspects of policy and program work, including:

  • leading the Government’s strategic regional and local government policy agenda

  • developing and coordinating cabinet submissions across the Department

  • writing speeches

  • leading the development of discrete national policies and programs
