As the Director, Industry Engagement and Business Development, you will be accountable for the development and implementation of industry engagement and business development strategies that build on the goals of the university, support our researchers to grow their industry funding, and connect research with the broader innovation ecosystem in Swinburne’s areas of research excellence.

The successful candidate will lead teams of industry engagement and research business development professionals to proactively build mutually beneficial collaborations between industry and the broader university. The team is responsible for providing high quality commercial advice and services to internal stakeholders, and for driving growth through strategic partnerships.

This role forms part of Swinburne’s Innovation & Enterprise leadership team and will suit a well-established thought leader and executive manager who will empower and inspire their teams. The Director will have exceptional commercial acumen, deep experience in the publicly funded research sector, and a focus on cross-functional collaboration. The successful candidate will champion industry collaboration across the university and build strong relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Purpose-driven leader dedicated to creating impact through research, with a mindset of welcoming industry participation in the research enterprise.
  • Extensive senior management experience in leading industry engagement activities across a broad range of disciplines, and proven ability to develop, implement and monitor strategic plans in business development and research partnerships.
  • Outstanding track record and highly developed skills in making pragmatic assessments of research related commercial opportunities along with exceptional negotiation, networking and influencing at senior levels of government, business and industry.
  • Exceptional commercial acumen, including budget responsibility in a research organization, as well as expert partnership risk management experience, and a strong appreciation of the role of intellectual property in achieving business success.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a leader of a professional team, including workflow planning, supervision and managing for optimal performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement commercial governance and risk management frameworks.
