The opportunity

Our Regulatory Services Department is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Coordinator Emergency Management to plan, develop and implement policies, strategies and procedures to meet Council's emergency management responsibilities. Reporting to the Manager Regulatory Services, this position will also lead and drive improvements to Council's Emergency Management operations, systems and processes, in line with current best practice. As our ideal candidate, you will understand the importance of building great relationships with your stakeholders, have previous local government experience and be able to hit the ground running.

Note this is a permanent full time position with one direct report.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of the Municipal Emergency Response Officer by ensuring Council meets its statutory Emergency Management obligations, this may include after hours and on call duties;
  • Provide specialist emergency management advice to the Manager Regulatory Services and the Executive Management Team regarding preparedness, response, relief and recovery in emergency situations, including changes to legislation, policy and practices specific to emergency management;
  • Coordinate the development, upkeep, review and continuous improvement of all reference documents and systems relevant to emergency management, including but not limited to the Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMP), sub-plans along with internal plans, policies and procedures relating to the strategic and operational responsibilities of Council;
  • Develop draft policies and strategies to build municipal, council and community resilience to emergencies impacting the City of Maribyrnong for consideration by the Manager Regulatory Services;
  • Provide a mentoring and support role for staff with emergency management responsibilities whilst coordinating recruitment of emergency management roles and training, as required. 

To be considered for this role, you will have the following: 

  • A formal qualification in emergency management with several years relevant experience or a lesser formal qualification with extensive relevant experience in the emergency management field;
  • Proven experience in coordinating cross functional teams;
  • Highly developed analytical, investigative and conceptual skills, the ability to solve complex problems and make decisions that reflect a thorough and appropriate evaluation of the issues to be addressed.
