Reporting to the Head of Communications, you will be responsible for developing and implementing external communications and public relations to support the Museum’s strategic goals, particularly in respect of profile, brand and revenue generation, and delivering relevant and timely information and support to the Museum’s external stakeholders through a variety of communication channels. A particular focus is engaging regional communities with the national maritime story.

Key responsibilities will include but not limited to the following:

  • Manage the external communications and public relations, consistent with strategy, and which supports the Museum's goals, particularly in respect of profile, regional engagement, brand and revenue generation.
  • Ensure the Museum’s achievements, initiatives, projects and values are effectively pitched to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and leverage strong working relationships with media and related stakeholders, particularly in regional Australia, to advance the Museum’s goals.
  • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of communications channels.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure communication activities are planned and business objectives are met.
  • Ensure all communications are aligned with the Museum’s corporate and business plans, brand and the APS Code of Conduct.

Key selection criteria:

  • Extensive experience and understanding of the Australian media landscape, including social media channels and emerging digital opportunities, particularly through regional Australia
  • Wide experience in a communications, public relations or speech writing role with demonstrated capacity to deliver strong results.
  • High level of ability to rapidly acquire understanding of legislative and political environment as it relates to the Museum, as well as public sector processes, procedures and protocols.
  • Broad experience in monitoring and applying continuous improvement to the development and delivery of communication plans and processes.
  • High level written and verbal communication, public presentation and interpersonal skills aiding your ability to develop credibility and trust with stakeholders.
  • Wide-ranging experience working independently in a highly organised way, multi-tasking, prioritising, managing information and meeting deadlines.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office: Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel.

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered for short listing by the Selection Committee. As part of the selection process the selection committee may invite candidates to undertake psychometric test, you should advise the selection committee if you have any special needs. Psychometric tests may be used as the initial short-listing test or later in the selection process. Some tests are very short while others may take one or more hours.
