We have a fantastic opportunity for an Academic Lead to assist the Head of Rural Clinical School at the University of Queensland, to provide academic and clinical oversight for program activities at The University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (UQRCS) Rockhampton Regional Clinical Unit. There is a particular focus to provide academic leadership for the MD learning program particularly in the area of clinical skills and simulation-based clinical training.

Key responsibilities will include:

Teaching and Learning

  • Support the Head of the Regional Clinical Unit in providing academic leadership and foster excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, with a particular focus on clinical skills and simulation.
  • Deliver teaching and assessment within the incumbent’s area of discipline expertise.
  • Guide and mentor clinical teaching staff, modelling and encouraging the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Provide academic leadership to clinical educators and support staff facilitating simulation-based training.
  • Manage student expectations and relations in the context of the overall learning experience.
  • Liaise with local Discipline Leads (Academic Supervisors) to ensure optimum outcomes in Program delivery.
  • Liaise with local medical education teams or agencies to foster collaborative and vertically integrated learning opportunities within the region.
  • Provide support for quality assurance and improvement procedures with the goal of enhancing program delivery.
  • Support the Head of Regional Clinical Unit and the Director of the UQRCS with the planning and implementation of the 4-year MD Program in Rockhampton as part of the CQ-WB Regional Medical Pathway.
  • Contribute to building the Regional Clinical Unit and the Rural Clinical School’s research capacity by enabling and engaging in collaborative research projects between UQ academics, health service clinicians and other partners.
  • Promote the relevance of research findings to improvements in health care and health outcomes.
  • Communicate research outcomes in traditional academic format as well as those formats accessible to clinicians and health consumers.
  • Maintain and enhance the academic standing of UQRCS Rockhampton Regional Clinical Unit
  • Assist the Head to manage stakeholder relations, build effective partnerships and alliances, and foster those activities and initiatives consistent with UQRCS aims and purpose.
  • Represent the interests and needs of UQRCS through membership of relevant committees.
  • Represent the Head when required.
  • A specialist qualification permitting registration with AHPRA and recognised by the appropriate specialist college.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership, organisational, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and highly developed skills in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels and involvement in continuing education in medical teaching.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships, work collaboratively with colleagues and to represent and promote the interests of the University to other academic units, healthcare executives, government, and professional bodies.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of rural communities and has worked and lived in a rural community.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor and nurture staff with diverse skills and abilities.
  • High-level communication skills.
  • Evidence of a contribution to research and scholarship
