With a living history that extends over 130 years, the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) is committed to providing quality experiences on campus that create a community for students, staff and visitors from a wide variety of backgrounds to thrive. As a non-profit organisation run by students, for students, we provide valuable funding that keeps the arts, representation, advocacy, live music and cultural services alive on campus, with the aim of immersing students in a wealth of cultural facilities and events whilst providing them with access to quality support services.

UMSU is an incorporated association and is recognised by the University of Melbourne as the representative body for all students. UMSU is governed by an elected Students’ Council and twelve committees elected by and from students. UMSU is responsible for a broad range of student representative, student engagement and student support activities.

UMSU operates under the principles of Student Unionism which are broadly defined as student control of student affairs.

We are currently seeking a new CEO to lead UMSU towards our goals of promoting and supporting the student voice while providing exemplary services and program to students. Working closely with the Students’ Council and supported by our talented and committed staff, the CEO will be responsible for providing ongoing quality improvement across the breadth of our services, with a particular focus on the productive participation by all students in the life of the University community.

With demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and the ability to effectively conceptualise and execute high level strategies, the appointed candidate will be intimately familiar with current challenges facing university students and broader trends within the higher education sector. They will bring a track record of managing complex and varied stakeholder relations and will be comfortable guiding sizeable teams of both professional staff and students to develop cohesive approaches to enhance all aspects of student life and wellbeing. Serving with integrity and transparency, they will bring a deep passion for the value of student politics and will be able to serve as powerful advocates for the Union with the University and within the wider community.
