The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is responsible for assisting the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room (OR) and Peri-op areas in the assessment, planning, provision, and evaluation of nursing services in specified nursing unit(s).
The ANM is responsible for organizing and facilitating the unit-based orientation, training, and development of staff and providing input for the evaluation of their performance to the Nurse Manager. The incumbent is expected to function in a clinical role that may include charge nurse and/or staff relief for meetings, sick call, etc., as needed. Assists the Nurse Manager with his/her responsibility, and accountability for t586-he 24/7 operations of assigned units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.
The incumbent assists the Nurse Manager with the following functions:
1) Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work.
2) Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates.
3) Evaluating the performance of subordinates.
4) Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates.
5) Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters.
6) Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors; and
7) Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training.
8) Assists with performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards.
9) Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with providers and other clinicians. Participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care.
10) Identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences.
11) Works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles.
12) Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
13) Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age- and population specific components.
14) Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient, and family education, patient self-management, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
15) Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences.
16) Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
17) Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary
18) Assures continual readiness of the unit for surveys and inspections from internal teams (i.e. EOC, VISN Clinical, etc.) or external bodies (i.e. JC, OSHA, etc.).
19) Makes work assignments based on needs of patients and facility. Demonstrates flexibility and critical thinking in revising assignments based on changing needs of Veterans or unit.
