The Human Resources and Property Branch, part of the People, Governance, Parliamentary and Communication Division in the department, is responsible for the delivery of a broad range of innovative human resource services and practices. We aim to successfully equip staff to meet immediate and emerging challenges, and work collaboratively with the branches to coordinate and deliver professional centralised services to the department.

As Assistant Director, WHS, you will be responsible for maturing the health and safety culture and practices of the department. This will include the implementation of a WHS Management System, compliance, development of monitoring and reporting processes and review of policies and procedures. You will lead a small team in the delivery of the operational health and safety functions including facilitating activities during two key months – Health Living Month and National Safe Work Month.

 

What will you do?

In this role you will be required to perform duties in accordance with the APS Values and Code of Conduct:

  • Ensure in-depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative, financial, legal and administrative frameworks, government decision-making processes and agency guidelines and regulations relevant to Human Resources.

  • Manage the implementation and compliance of the department’s WHS Management System and recommend strategic direction and consider wider agency implications when making decisions.

  • Establish and maintain networks and relationships with our internal colleagues in the external Territories, central agencies, other Commonwealth agencies, service providers and professional networks.

  • Provide expert advice and tailored responses to work health and safety queries including strategic advice where appropriate.

  • Manage the secretariat function for the department’s WHS Committee; including coordination of WHS Work Groups.

  • Develop and regularly update strategies, policies and guidelines related to WHS and manage staff consultation on these matters.

  • Deliver the department’s health and wellbeing programs; including the delivery of Healthy Living Month and Safe Work Month initiatives.

  • Prepare correspondence and corporate documentation, reports, submissions, proposal papers and notes related to this role.

  • Take responsibility for the achievements of own and team outcomes, monitor progress and follow through to deliver quality outcomes.
